“Timing Is Everything”

Brides maids help bride at the last minute

Welcome back and happy New Year! Wow what a great start to the new year for us at J’Elite. This year we had the opportunity to participate in the Forever Bridal expo and met so many people-brides, their families, friends and many wedding professionals.  The most exciting aspect of the Bridal expo was meeting new brides who were so excited yet overwhelmed by planning their wedding.  However, here are a few tips that might help your planning. Maybe you’re a master at planning and you have decided not to hire a professional wedding planner. At least consider having someone to help you create a timeline for your special day.  As photographers we have seen so many weddings and figured we could help you with some tips on timing your special day through the eyes of a photographer.  After all, you want your photographer to capture as much as possible based on contracted hours and the images you desire to tell your Wedding Story!

Here are a few things to consider:

Is your wedding falling on the weekend of some other major event- Duke and Carolina Game…or will your special day be in the vicinity of that event?

How much travel is involved between the wedding location and wedding reception?  A 5 minute trip can easily turn into 15 minutes in traffic.

Where do you, the groom and bridal party plan to get dressed?  This could really save you when discussing how much time you will need for your wedding reception and photography.   Are you wearing a lace up gown? Whose the pro that will help ensure this gown is perfectly stringed to fit, this is no easy task.

Consider asking everyone to be in place 2-3 hours before the ceremony begins…. This makes for great photo memories even if your photographer is not contracted to start at that time, not to mention it eases the stress of knowing where everyone is and when they will arrive because it’s not “15 minutes til.”

Anyone that can take formal pictures before your wedding should.  Keep in mind; guests tend to start arriving an hour earlier than the ceremony starts. It’s your wedding, but you are also the host. Consider having an area set aside for early arrivals, so that your photographer can get those formals of the “little people” before the instinctive discomfort begins…”I’m hungry, I’m sleepy, and I’m itchy”.  Children tend to cooperate better with a photographer when they are comfortable with him or her and in a good mood.

Lastly, talk with your photographer and wedding planner about how to best maximize your time.  This will be important.  Most wedding vendors will ask you about time of day and the hours desired.  This is the basis for everything.  If you can say to your photographer, based on this wedding day setup, how many hours do you think I need, you have begun to minimize your stress.  You can then discuss how to plan your day and time.  Perhaps 4 hours works for you or you want a full day of coverage.  A timeline can give you both realistic expectations so that you and your groom are not under time and over budget or over time and above budget.   Your time should equal your monies spent….which gives you added value to expect a desired outcome!   :~)

UPDATE!

I asked a few of my wedding/event planners if they wanted to add a statement to this post.  Samantha from Bliss by Sam stated” as the wedding planner, we serve as the overall event manager aka “time keeper”. Since we know exactly where each person and wedding professional are supposed to be at any time point, we ensure that weddings remain on schedule. Weddings are long days not only for the wedding party but for the guests, so it’s important that things are easily transitioned. Also, if the couples wants to adjust the timeline during the event, the coordinator can ensure all the key players are notified of this. As J’Elite knows, Bliss is serious about a timeline!”

Another great wedding planner to contact is Terry Spicer of Spiced Elegance, who’s  personal hands-on approach to each event and  flair for detail really stands out. With 25 years in the wedding/event planning business Terry has a flair for honoring the needs of her clients.

Meet Avra!

I first meet Avra at a photo shoot for Studio 714 West she was impressed with my work and schedule a personal photo session at the studio for her new natural hair salon AL’s Natural Styles. What I like about Avra is that she was willing to try something different.  She came to the photo shoot with  a 1920’s costume  that looked great on her. I look forward to more clients  doing creative photo sessions like Avra’s  this upcoming new year.

Why I love off camera flash…

It is necessary when lighting your subject to have as much control over the lighting as possible. This is not always ideal when shooting weddings or events where the action is always changing. I like soft natural looking lighting when taking pictures of people most of the time. I have to admit that this is not always true when it comes to shooting models but I’ll save that blog topic for another day.
Have you ever taken a picture of a person with an on camera flash and got a harsh white light spot on their face and even red eye? Ever wonder why? It’s simple, this is often caused by the flash being too close to the lens giving your photo an amateurish look. Want to change this? Then buy a remote, there are two kinds of remotes for flashes: a generic radio remote and a wireless one designed to work with your flash like the Nikon sb900. Both of these will let you place your flash away from the camera. Check out Strobist or photo.net for more information soon you’ll be taking pictures like the pros.

Meet Latoya & Quistan…

they are both cute and charming.  For now I’ll share some of our favorites from their engagement session.  Amazingly, the triangle area is considered one of the most popular places for weddings and engagements; some might even call it the wedding capital.  Take any Saturday in the month and it wouldn’t be hard to look across at the state capital and see newlyweds being photographed on the lawn.    So much so that a photographer can really be hard pressed to find a unique location.  But we live and love to be creative, especially when a couple is open to try something different.

It is so easy to get caught up on “the location” of an engagement session. Location is important as it can be the tapestry for all things beautiful.  It’s the place a couple selects because it’s where they had their first date, got engaged or simply because the location is beautiful…..but I would dare to say that the engagement is so much more.

Here we found this neat little spot in downtown Raleigh.  Hidden away, behind a wall we found a little oasis of sunshine, leaves of fall and playful but passionate Latoya & Quistan.  Engagement photos should be timeless, yet telling. They should be carefree, fun…..memorable.  Here they are with their backs to the sun, sitting at the fountain and you can see how the light just reached across them falling on the water.

We made use of the small spaces….curious nooks, brick columns, concrete benches and natural light.  This shoot was so much fun because it wasn’t the obvious.  I love grand locations….but here we found our diamond in the rough of downtown Raleigh ….pun intended!

UMMM…UMMM CAKE!

No matter how many weddings I have photographed, there is always some detail that is not only remarkable but   sweet….  Yes,  I like to see the first kiss or how she looks at him or he looks at her when they take their first dance as husband and wife, oh so sweet. But for me it is one of the best moments of all….the  cutting of the wedding cake.  It might sound strange but I absolutely love cake…it’s the metaphor of life- “piece of cake” you can’t have your cake and eat it too”  “it’s a cake walk”

But it is so much more than that.  As a photographer, I know the effort it takes for a bride to make her wedding day perfect.  No one ever knows the work it takes to pick the perfect cake.

This is the one time the bride and groom can have their wedding cake and  eat it too!

The two tirelessly choose a cake that represents them both.   Perhaps he loves chocolate fudge and she loves almond amaretto…..or maybe they both love pound cake with sour cream….ooh maybe even strawberry.  The flavors and cake designs are limitless.   Nowadays cakes are made so beautifully until many couples don’t even choose  a cake topper.  Here are just a few of our “faves” throughout the years….selecting was no cake walk.  Tell me what you think.

Tamika and Randy

Sunday was great! The weather was perfect and my new happy couple had a ball shooting engagement photographs. This  turned out to be a night time photo shoot using off camera flash and light modifiers. Tamika and Randy are getting married in November.  The couple were all smiles playing and laughing, making it easy to capture joyful moments at Duke gardens.   I can’t wait to be a part of their special day.
